Team Plowman Craven competed in the Salford Nocturne (Saturday 30th), after a 'home coming' celebration for the British Olympic Team the boys in pink and blue lined up, with the light rapidly fading for an hour long blast around a partially floodlit Salford Quays.
Joining the team for a rare appearance in this type of event was Plowman Craven's Craig McLean, who had earlier won the roller racing event. McLean was in demand throughout the evening from enthusiastic fans who were ecstatic to see him competing in such a novel event.
With the flag dropped the race set off at break neck speed, and after a few tentative attacks, Ian Wilkinson (S.I.S.) went clear and was soon joined by Team Plowman Craven rider Simon Richardson and Liam Holohan (Pearl Izumi). The trio gain a large advantage around the tight circuit, as behind the bunch began to splinter after attacks from Rob Hayles with Simon Gaywood in tow. After one such move Matt Stephens (Sigma) moved clear taking Tom Barras and Rhys Lloyd for company.
Despite small attacks the race remained in this format until 10 laps to go when an increase in the shredded peleton saw Barras and his companions caught. At the head of affairs the leaders pressed on, the laps counted down and Holohan was the first to make a bid for freedom, he quickly gained a 100 metre advantage with just 2 laps remaining. Richardson was in no mood to settle for second place and set about reducing the young rider's advantage, closing in on him with a lap to go. Wilkinson took the initiative and hit out for the finish line. Richardson and Holohan tried to get back on to terms but to no avail as he Wilkinson took the victory with Holohan edging Richardson out in the sprint for 2nd.
Peleton was led in one minute in arrears by Rob Hayles (BikeHut) with Gaywood and Barras in 8th and 9th respectively.
Tom Barras explained the race "The breakaway went early and I tried to get across to Simon without taking other riders, it wasn't possible to do that in the end, there was a bit of confusion when they didn't ring the bell with a lap to go which affected our finishing positions slightly. We are all in good form and looking forward to Tour of Britain next weekend."
