Following on from the National Criterium Championships on Friday evening Team Plowman Craven lined up for the East Yorkshire Classic on Sunday.
Fielding a strong team including Evan Oliphant who the previous day had taken the Scottish Road Race title, the Plowman Craven team spent the early part of the race using James Millard and new recruit Marc Perry to cover the moves. This allowed Oliphant and Richardson to save their energies for the steep climbs that would provide them with a springboard.
With an hour of racing covered a small group containing Millard was captured and as they began the first major climb of the day a small group led by Richardson moved clear. This proved to be the break of the day and steadily their advantage grew. Riders in the peleton realising they had missed their chance tried to break free, including National Champion Rob Hayles and tried to cross over to the leaders. It soon became obvious that the selection had been made, and thanks to some strong riding by Richardson the breakaway group was reduced to 7.
As the group hit the finishing circuits in Beverley, Richardson's constant attacks had proved fruitless, and when Russell Downing attacked he took only Kristian House for company. Downing dragged House to the line while behind Richardson fought to get back onto terms. Downing took the win from House while and exhausted Richardson finished in 7th place. After the race Richardson commented "That was a tough day, I was trying to save as much as I could for the end of the race, Russell kept attacking towards the end and I was countering him. As we went on to the finishing circuit he went for the final time, I tried to bring them back risking it all for the win but it wasn't to be."
