1st August 2008

Fielding a super strong squad including defending champion James McCullam the team set about controlling the race in which they have been so successful for the past 2 seasons. With constant attacks during the extremely fast start the team were seen at the front of the race, letting rival teams attack and slowly reeling them back in. Keeping the race largely together for the first 40 minutes of racing the speed now begun to tell and a group of 11 riders went clear, including McCallum.

Upon their capture another group gained a successful advantage again containing McCullam, also joined by team mates Barras and Gibb. The race was on in the most exciting Championship for years. The pace was fierce in the peleton behind as they attempted to reel back in the flying break away riders, a crash in the group provided the peleton with the chance they needed and the group was absorbed into the peleton.

The race remained together for just a few laps before Tom Barras burst out of the pack with Dean Downing (Rapha) the pair worked well together as they lapped the tough cobbled circuit. With both time and light running out Barras and Downing were joined by 3 others and they set about a do or die effort in a bid to take the title. Tom Southam (Halfords) led the charge behind marked by Plowman Craven's Gibb surrounded by his team mates.

With just a few laps remaining the group came back together under the pressure from Rob Hayles (Halfords) Downing took the initiative and went on the offensive once more. Barras began the chase burying himself for Gibb as they hit the finish line for the penultimate time, Gaywood took over with half a lap remaining leaving Gibb to open up his sprint for the line. Downing held on to just a 30 centimetre advantage over Hayles with Gibb a similar distance behind in third.
