Gibb takes third

26th June 2008

Tony Gibb and Russ Downing keep the speed high on the bell lap | Photo © Andrew Kennedy & British CyclingTeam Plowman Craven travelled to Otley in Yorkshire to take part in the latest round of the National Circuit Series on Thursday evening.

With Yorkshire hit by heavy rain showers for most of the day the riders faced tricky conditions from the start with standing water spread across the course and a tricky corner at the bottom of a 40mph decent only a few hundred metres from the finish line.

The pace was relentless from the start as the riders quickly got into their stride with Team Plowman Craven's Simon Gaywood attacking from the gun with Pete Williams (Pinarello), they gained a small advantage on the rampaging peleton but their freedom was short lived. Such was the speed of the race that no one could escape the clutches of the peleton for more than a lap, although the constant pace saw numerous splits in the peleton as riders found the pace too challenging and were forced to retire.

With half the race covered the peleton remained together Team Plowman Craven battled at the front of the race to keep Team Captain Tony Gibb at the head of affairs and to neutralise any attacks from other dangerous riders. Now the rain began to fall heavily as one by one the competitors tried their luck but to no avail, as the race looked set to end in a bunch sprint. Plowman Craven started their charge with 4 laps of the circuit still remaining as Alex Higham led, keeping the pace high before making way for team mates Simon Gaywood and James McCallam.

After the victory ceremony Gibb described the final metres "The lads kept me close to the front in the final laps, coming into the final bend I got swamped and had to make the best of a tricky situation".
