McCallum returns

18th June 2008

With key members of the team Simon Richardson and Tony Gibb missing due to Richardson's illness and Gibb competing in an invitation event in Germany, the race saw the return of Team Plowman Craven's National Criterium Champion James McCallum, who has suffered many setbacks this year with numerous injuries. Edinburgh based McCallum has slowly been building his condition and picked the Stone event to test his form, before continuing with his training as he prepares for objectives later in the year.

The circuit was extremely technical with numerous tight corners and very narrow in places; the rain that fell made the roads slippery and from the first minutes of the race being in the first few riders was imperative. From the gun the field was lined out and the gaps immediately appeared as the riders battled to get to the front of the peleton.

Within a few laps there was a split and seven riders went clear including Team Plowman Craven's Simon Gaywood. Lapping at fierce pace the leaders quickly opened up a large gap over the chasers, with just 15 minutes gone Malcolm Elliot decided to go it alone and quickly opened up a gap on the treacherous circuit. Behind Gaywood and McCallum were aggressive but before the halfway point their attacks were countered by Dean Downing and Pete Williams. Gaywood moved to the head of the chasers and began setting a blistering pace for lap after lap bringing Downing and Williams back from 30 to 10 seconds, looking for assistance Gaywood found the other members of the group unwilling to contribute to the chase and the duos advantage began to increase again. Russell Downing attacked and after a brief chase joined his brother and team mate Williams.

With Gaywood finishing 7th, Oliphant in 13th and Barras in 17th.
