Following on from Fridays criterium Team Plowman Craven lined up in Sundays Beaumont Trophy Road Race the sixth round of the season long Premier Calendar.
This tough 105 mile route tackled the steep Ryals climb on 3 circuits before moving to a smaller loop around the Northumbrian village of Stamfordham. After 10 miles a group of nine riders went clear and established a 1.37 second lead, while behind Team Plowman Cravenled a steady chase slowly reducing the group's advantage despite their efforts being disrupted.
Just before the final accent of the Ryals climb Rob Hayles (Halfords) escaped and quickly bridged to the leaders, several attempts from Plowman Craven riders were thwarted by other teams not allowing them any freedom and consequently they remained at the front of the race slowly reducing their deficit. Hayles wasted no time and set about thinning the group out taking 3 other riders with him for company as they lapped the small finishing circuits, the 4 soon became 2 as Richard Sykes Popham and Rob Sharman lost contact with Hayles and companion Peter Williams (Pinarello).
The pink and blue train were closing in fast and as the riders entered the final lap the duo held on to a 30 second advantage. The pair worked well over the final lap, their lead slowly disappeared as Plowman Craven tried to set up a sprint finish for Simon Gaywood. Now just 5km stood between the leaders and the packed finish line at Stamfordham, with their lead now at just 20 seconds it was touch and go if they would survive.
The crowd at the finished line awaited the riders in anticipation, as first Williams rounded the final corner chased by Hayles who overhauled him in the final metres to take victory followed by the peleton with Simon Gaywood finishing in 6th place after a fine lead out from Tom Barras, clearly signifying his return to form.
Talking about his return to form Gaywood said “Today was a hard race, we tried to control things but a lot of riders seemed to be really negative, we nearly caught the remnants of the break in the last few kilometres. Tom and the lads gave me a really good lead out, and I can feel I am coming into good form for the next races.”
