Team Plowman Craven continued their impressive run of podium places in Friday's criterium at Newcastle Leazes within sight of St James' Park.
With an attack from Plowman Craven's Alex Higham from the gun the tone of the race was set. For the first few laps Plowman Craven marshalled the race, making sure that the danger men were allowed no freedom. With nine laps gone a small group had escaped containing Plowman Craven's James Millard, Tom Southam (Halfords) and Polish rider Marcin Bialoblocki (Sportsbeans). The group appeared to be moving clear as behind Rapha Condor led the peleton with no rider present in the breakaway. But with a loss of impetus the breakaway was caught with 20 minutes remaining.
An attack by Tony Gibb was short lived but set up an opportunity for a counter attack from Tom Southam, quickly joined by Simon Richardson the pair's lead began to grow and grow. Millard policed the peleton behind stopping both Downing and then Hayles from joining the duo. With 2 laps remaining Richardson launched a strong attack on the small climb just after the finish line. Southam however clawed his way back up to the former MTB star and the pair were together once again at the bell.
Southam led the sprint out of the final corner, with Richardson narrowly failing to come around Southam on the line. The sprint for third went to Dean Downing just edging out Simon Gaywood with Tony Gibb finishing in 7th.
Simon Richardson stated "The team rode really well today, it was quite a tactical race there was lots of attacks from the other strong riders and each time there was always a Plowman Craven rider covering them. In the final metres I tried to come around Tom but it was such a twisty finishing straight it proved difficult to come around him before the line"
