Brentwood Criterium

After their previous nights exertions in London Team Plowman Craven moved to Brentwood in Essex for the third round of the National Criterium Series.
The rain that plagued the Smithfield's race had disappeared leaving the Brentwood round of the series blessed with warm sunshine, as the riders blasted away from the line to complete the first lap of the tight technical circuit with numerous narrow corners and a hairpin bend just 100metres from the finish line. The action came thick and fast with numerous attacks from Team Plowman Craven and the other strong men of the race including Rob Hayles (Halfords Bike Hut) and Dean Downing (Rapha-Condor).
Each attack came to nothing as the right combination of riders had not yet been found. Shortly before half distance Dean Downing launched an attack taking several riders clear including Plowman Craven's Tom Barras also present were Downing's team mate Simon Holt and Rob Hayles. Behind the leaders Plowman Craven waited and launched Tony Gibb forward in a bid to join the leaders. Gibb pressed on behind the lead group as it began to split under the pressure after an attack from Downing with some 15 minutes still remaining.
After a valiant chase Gibb made contact with the group and began to try to reel in Downing, Rob Hayles and set the finish up for team mate Barras. Hayles was in no mood to wait for a bunch sprint and set off alone in pursuit of Downing. The group tried to catch the pair but to no avail, with Downing crossing the line alone 28 seconds clear of Hayles who in turn was a further 16 seconds ahead of the sprint for third with Jeroen Janssen just getting the advantage of Tom Barras had a remarkable ride to take 5th after a nasty crash on only the second lap. The rest of the team followed shortly apart from Simon Richardson who had crashed out towards the end of the race.
