Every year millions of pounds are raised for good causes by the BBCs Children in Need Appeal. Across the Country, the famous and not so famous take part in charity events, culminating in a spectacular Friday night TV extravaganza (Friday 16 November this year).
The theme of this years' Children in Need Appeal was Do Something Different, which is exactly what BBC Breakfast presenters Chris Hollinds and Carol Kirkwood did by cycling from Glasgow to Edinburgh on a tandem (Thursday 15 November).
"Carol and I thought it would be great idea to visit organisations where money from Children in Need has made a difference, and came up with the idea of travelling from Glasgow to Edinburgh by tandem," explained Chris.
While sports presenter Chris has experience of cycling the London triathlon, and weather reporter Carol regularly rides her bike to the shops, both thought it would be a good idea to get some tips from Plowman Craven Evans Cycles' pro rider Tony Gibb before they set off. The three met up in London's Battersea Park for a training session, which was broadcast on BBC Breakfast. Chris and Carol quickly adapted to two-up riding once Tony had helped them resolve such technical issues as who was in charge and why the person at the back can't stop cycling! Just in case they forgot what they learned in Battersea Park, Tony was on hand as they rode the 50 miles between Glasgow and Edinburgh, visiting Children in Need Projects along the way.
"Children in Need is a great event and Plowman Craven Evans Cyclesare only too happy to help out” commented Tony. “Our sponsor Evans Cycles arranged for the tandem and I made sure they stayed upright!"
The ride started at the St Albert's Primary School in Glasgow and finished at the Reunion Canal Project in Edinburgh which provides watersports activities in one of the City's most deprived areas. St Albert's received £4,000 from Children in Need for musical instruments, while the Reunion Project were provided with £5,000 worth of equipment. You can see both schemes by clicking the link below.
