Plowman Craven Evans Cycles rider Gordon McCauley has been selected to represent New Zealand in the time trial at the World Cycling Championships in Stuttgart this September. It's not the first time that the 36-year old Kiwi will wear the distinctive black kit of his home country; in the 2006 Commonwealth games in Melborne McCauley took Bronze in the time trial. He also remains the only overseas rider to have won the British Cycling Premier Calendar, in 1999.
McCauley has also been voted New Zealand Cyclist of the Year, beating among others, Tour de France rider and New Zealand Champion for Credit Agricole, Julian Dean.
"This is a dream come true," commented McCauley. "I've been working hard on my time trialling this season with the World's in mind, and riding the Tour of Ireland and Tour of Britain with Plowman Craven Evans Cycles will be the perfect final preparation. The longer distance in Stuttgart will suit me down to the ground so I'm hoping for a good result.
"Being voted Cyclist of the Year is also fantastic," continued McCauley. "There are a lot of guys out there riding well at a very high level and to be chosen over them is a real compliment."
McCauley's selection comes on the back of a successful season of racing in the UK. He has won two criteriums and currently leads the National individual road race rankings, as well as lying in third place in the Premier Calendar series, only a point behind second; his team, Plowman Craven Evans Cycles, have already won three National titles this season, including the National Criterium Championship and the National 25 mile three-up Team Time Trial Championship, as well as two rounds of the Premier Calendar road race series; they also lead both the National Team road race rankings and the National Circuit Series.
McCauley's form was on show last weekend (5 August) when he finished third behind Saunier Duval's David Millar and DFL'S Daniel Lloyd in the British Elite Road Race Championships, although as a Kiwi he was unable to take a podium place.
Over the summer McCauley has been successfully targeting time trials in preparation for Stuttgart. Last week (Thursday 2 August) he won the Abergavenny 10 in a new course record; in July he won the Hemel Hempstead 25, beating his nearest rival by nearly 4 minutes despite constant heavy rain and strong winds; earlier in the month he broke the course record for the Hemel Hempstead 10 by an astounding 30 seconds, and he also won the 18 mile Hemel Hempstead Hilly, breaking a course record which has stood since 1991. And together with team mates Tony Gibb, Simon Gaywood and James Millard, McCauley won the Port Talbot Wheeler 25 mile four-up, once again setting a new course record despite appalling weather conditions.
Simon Barnes, team founder and boss of Hertfordshire based Geomatics company Plowman Craven added:
"The whole Plowman Craven Evans Cycles Team is delighted for Gordon. He has worked so hard for us this season and it's fantastic that the New Zealand selectors have recognised this. Gordon is the complete professional – his commitment is total and no-one gives more than him in a race. "
"I'm convinced he will finish in the high places in Stuttgart. We will be doing everything we can to support him and help him prepare, and riding the Tours of Ireland and Britain for Plowman Craven Evans Cycles will put him in the ideal shape."
A top sixteen finish in Stuttgart will ensure McCauley qualifies for the New Zealand Olympic squad for next year's Olympics. Clothing sponsor Impsport will be providing him with a special Plowman Craven Evans Cycles skin suit in the distinctive black of New Zealand, complete with silver fern.
Meanwhile, Plowman Craven Evans Cycles have named their squad for the Tours of Ireland and Britain this summer. McCauley will join team mates Tony Gibb, Simon Gaywood, James Millard, James McCallum and Freddie Johansson, together with the Rapha Condor rider Richard Wilkinson, who will be guesting for the Team in both races.
