Plowman Craven, Europe’s leading mapping and measurement company have formed an exciting partnership with British Eurosport to provide detailed 3D maps of the UK stages of this year's Tour de France.
The digital sports channel will use Plowman Craven’s virtual representation of the Prologue and first stage of the ‘07 Tour to illustrate key features on both routes as part of its Tour de France analysis.
The technology has been identified by the channel as a way of bringing key elements of the event to life in a cutting edge way for both the casual viewer and dedicated cycling fan.
Plowman Craven is already heavily involved in cycling as the sponsor of the UK's top professional cycling trade team, Plowman Craven Evans Cycles. It is also experienced in developing 3D images for the screen, having worked on the latest Harry Potter and James Bond movies. They already provide maps for British Eurosport’s coverage of the British Premier Calendar cycle race series.
"As a mapping and measurement company that is also heavily involved in cycling this partnership makes perfect sense," commented Plowman Craven MD Simon Barnes. "The fans get better coverage of races and also begin to understand what it is that Plowman Craven does when they see the name on the shirts of the pro team we sponsor."
Gavin Scovell, British Eurosport’s Head of Production said: "We are always interested in utilising the best technology to add value and visual interest to our coverage of all sports. Cycling is a dynamic sport and this arrangement gives fans an exciting new geographical view of the terrain the riders will face and the key points of interest along the Tour de France route."
British Eurosport was amongst the first channels to utilise the ball tracking system Hawk-Eye in tennis as part of its match analysis presentation for the French Open in 2006. The technology was initially used in cricket.
You can watch the Prologue live on Eurosport this Saturday between 1400 - 1830 and again between 2100 - 2200. Stage 1 will be broadcast live between 1030 - 1635 with highlights between 2100 and 2200.
