Plowman Craven Evans Cycles critical weekend

11th June 2007

Tony GibbGordon McCauley gave Plowman Craven Evans Cycles completed two days of back-to-back criterium racing with top four places in both of the latest rounds of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series held at Hillingdon and Brentwood this weekend (9/10 June).

On Saturday Tony Gibb, took third place in the 80 km Hillingdon GP in the biggest field yet witnessed on the purpose built circuit in West London. In a fast race, described by winner Rob Hayles (KLR) as "like riding the rollers", the attacks came fast and furious throughout but none managed to stay away. The Plowman Craven Evans Cycles squad were constantly at the front of the action with Gordon McCauley among the most prominent attackers. When the best break of the day was caught on the last lap a bunch sprint determined the placings, with Hayles the fastest on the day. Adam Blythe (SiS/Trek) narrowly beat Gibb to take second place. McCauley finished seventh while team mate and fellow Kiwi Jason Allen finished eleventh. Hayles' victory saw him take the overall series lead from Plowman Craven Evans Cycles rider Simon Gaywood who had won the first race at Crawley.

The next day the team travelled east to Essex for the third event in the Elite Circuit Series, the Brentwood Town Centre Circuit Races, and a fourth place for Gordon McCauley.

On an uninspiring course Plowman Craven Evans Cycles riders were again at the forefront of the action, taking it in turns to attack and shake up the race. Current National Criterium Champion James Taylor led the bunch in the early stages before team mate Tony Gibb - the man he beat into second place in last years' Championship - attacked, stringing the peleton out behind him. Next it was the turn of Plowman Craven Evans Cycles rider and Toachim GP winner James McCallum to put some daylight between himself and the bunch, until team mate Gordon McCauley together with Warwick Spence (Cyclefit/Serotta) and Russell Downing (HealthNet) made the definitive break of the day. Joined on the last lap by Simon Holt (Recycling) after a heroic ten lap chase on his own, the foursome sprinted it out for the line, with Downing taking the win from Spence and Holt.

It's a busy fortnight ahead for the boys in the pink and blue Impsort shirts as Plowman Craven Evans Cycles compete in two Premier Calendar Series events, a number of criteriums, including the next round of the Elite Circuit Series and the Smithfield Nocturne in Central London, as well as a team time trial.
