Plowman Craven Evans Cycles miss win but dominate places in Ixworth crit

7th May 2007

Gordon McCauley discusses tactics with Kevin Barclay, James Taylor and James McCallum before the race.Plowman Craven Evans Cycles' Simon Gaywood narrowly lost out in a sprint finish to Alex Dowsett of 100% Me in the Ixworth Bank Holiday Monday circuit race in Suffolk (7th May) in what was always a two man race. The pair got away in the first few laps of the 1 hr + 5 lap race near Bury St Edmunds and were never caught, lapping most of the field by the halfway point despite a determined chase by Plowman Craven Evans Cycles team mate Gordon McCauley and SIS Trek rider Ian Bibby.

Plowman Craven Evans Cycles took some consolation in a final result which saw them take second, fourth (McCauley), fifth (James Taylor) and sixth place (Jason Allen) in the race, and coming only a day after James McCallum and Gordon McCauley gave the team a 1/2 in the Toachim GP.

By the halfway point only McCauley and Bibby had not been caught by the leaders, and two distinct groups had developed within the rest of the field, when a sudden downpour temporarily threw the race into confusion and caused many riders to crash on the tight circuit. When the skies cleared James Taylor and James Millard jumped from the second chasing group to the first to join their Plowman Craven Evans Cycles team mates Jason Allen and James McCallum and together they began to control the chasing group.

Although McCauley and Bibby did close the gap on the leaders, Dowsett and Gaywood were never in any real danger of being caught. As they entered the last corner Gaywood was on Dowsett's wheel waiting for the right point to attack, but the Olympic Development Squad rider was too strong on the day and jumped gaining a bike length on Gaywood to take the win.

Speaking after the race Gaywood, a former winner of the event, commented:

"Alex well and truly deserved his win today. At times it was like sitting behind a motorbike and I just couldn't get past him in the final straight. I guess it's sweet revenge for him since we managed to kept him from doing anything yesterday at the Toachim GP."

This coming weekend (13th May) Plowman Craven Evans Cycles travel to the east of England for the next race in the Premier Calendar series, the 86 mile Lincoln GP. More than 170 riders will race 11 laps of an 8 mile circuit in the heart of the historic City of Lincoln, on a course that includes the steep 1 in 6 cobbled climb of Michaelgate. Plowman Craven Evans Cycles will be fielding their entire squad and are billed as serious contenders with Gordon McCauley's experience of riding on the cobbles from his racing days in Belgium marking him out as a particular threat.
