Plowman Craven Evans Cycles 1/2 at Toachim GP

6th May 2007

McCallum takes the Toachim James McCallum led a Plowman Craven Evans Cycles 1/2 to win the 120 km Toachim House GP in Sevenoaks, Kent (6 May) ahead of team mate Gordon McCauley.

McCallum, Bronze medallist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the 20 km scratch race, used his track speed with 2 kms to go and sprinted away from team mate McCauley and Richard Mardle of Felt Racing to take the win by 7 seconds after 5 laps of the rolling Lingfield Circuit around the village of Edenbridge, which included the climbs of Dormansland and Holtye. McCauley, despite suffering from a chest infection and being treated with antibiotics, finished 4 seconds ahead of Mardle.

The team preperation talkAt the end of a first lap full of attacks, McCauley had managed to gain 40 secs before being caught by a chasing group of 30 which included team mates Jason Allen, Tony Gibb, Freddy Johansson, James Taylor, Simon Gaywood and James McCallum. With attacks continuing fast and furious and the remnants of the peleton spread out behind, Plowman Craven Evans Cycles had enough riders to cover each move and gain a tactical advantage.

Coming in to the last lap McCallum attacked the group, taking multiple World Champion Rob Hayles of Team KLR and Mardle with him, and joined later by the irrepressible McCauley. On the final hill with 2 kms to go McCallum made his move and gained a few seconds which he held to take the win.

Jason Allen of Plowman Craven Evans Cycles finished in sixth place, despite needing to take a wheel from team mate Freddie Johansson with half a lap to go, outsprinting a small group that included team mate and recent Archer winner Simon Gaywood.

Speaking after the race a delighted McCallum commented:

"It was a great team effort - they handed me the letter and all I had to do was put it in the letter box!"

Second placed McCauley was also quick to praise his team mates' efforts in the race:

"It was great to see Jimmy (James McCallum) and Jase (Allen) both up there racing for the win after all the hard unseen yards they have put in for the team in the early part of the season. It really shows how strong a team Plowman Craven Evans Cycles is"
