Two Wins In Two Weeks For Plowman Craven Evans Cycles

26th March 2007

Plowman Craven Evans Cycles won their second race in a row this weekend when Gordon MaCauley took the Hounslow Spring Road Race (Sunday March 25 March). And in yet another demonstration of consistent Team riding, Plowman Craven finished with four riders in the top ten.

Two Wins In Two Weeks For Plowman Craven Evans CyclesFollowing his win in last week's High Wycombe Road Race, MaCauley, along with fellow potential favourites Alex Dowsett (100% ME), Dean Downing (Rapha/Condor) and team mate and 2006 winner Tony Gibb, was disappointed to miss the early split after the race set off at a blistering pace. However unlike his rivals MaCauley was able to jump the gap and make the break, joining team mates James Taylor, Adam Norris and Freddy Johansson who had been driving the break.

Despite snapping a spoke, MaCauley stayed with the break as it as reduced to four and eventually three riders. MaCauley, Rob Sharman (KFS Special Vehicles) and Richard Wilkinson (Rapha/Condor) continued to press home their advantage, gaining a good gap over a fragmented pack. Team mates Jason Allen and Tony Gibb worked hard to join the chasing group, and Gibb together with Scot Gamble (Ashfield RC) rode through but were unable to reach the leaders. With two laps to go MaCauley tested the breakaway by attacking but was reeled in. However, when he went again on the final lap he managed to gain a few bike lengths on his rivals, eventually winning by 6 seconds from Sharman. Wilkinson took third at 10 seconds. Team mate Tony Gibb came in fourth, with Freddy Johansson and James Taylor seventh and eighth respectively.

Speaking after the race Gordon commented:

“Two wins in two weeks – who wouldn’t be pleased with that! I was disappointed to miss the initial break but James, Adam and Freddy did a great job driving it along and I’m pleased I made it across; it gave me the confidence to stay with the pace as the group split and eventually to attack the remaining two to take the win”.

Simon Barnes, Team founder and boss of Herts based Geomatics company Plowman Craven, added:

“Obviously I’m pleased with the win and for Gordon but the result that really jumps out at me is four Plowman Craven riders in the top ten. This strength in depth is what really excites me, together with the fact that every break had a Plowman Craven rider in it. A Team is more than just riders wearing the same shirt and these guys are really working for each other and riding intelligently in order to win races.”

Next Sunday (1 April) Plowman Craven Evans Cycles ride the second round of the Premier Calendar at the Tour of the Reservoir, before competing at the Good Friday Track Meeting at Herne Hill and the Girvan three day stage race in Scotland over the Easter weekend.
