Plowman Craven Begin Assualt on Premier Calendar

12th March 2007

Plowman Craven Evans Cycles Race Team kicked off their assault on the 2007 British Cycling Premier Calendar this weekend with an excellent third place for Freddie Johannsen in the opening prologue of the Bikeline two day stage race in North Wales.

Tony Gibb - Series LeaderRiding into a strong headwind, Swedish national squad member Johanssen was only 6 seconds down on the leaders after the 1.6 km prologue. An unfortunate puncture on stage two meant he lost his overall placing, leaving team mate Gordon McCauley the highest placed Plowman Craven rider, 27 seconds down at seventh, after he finished sixth in a very tough stage.

Keen to make up time on the leaders, 1999 Premier Calendar winner McCauley attacked from the flag stretching out the field of 100 riders. The race settled into a series of attacks, with Plowman Craven riders, and McCauley in particular, always in the action. With two laps to go a small group of 15 made the definitive break, including McCauley and team mates Johannsen and James Millard. But with 20 km to go to the finish five riders got away on a long 7% climb, leaving another group of five, lead by McCauley, chasing hard at 25 seconds. McCauley finished the stage in sixth place, taking seventh overall. Team mate James Millard took eighth.

Simon Barnes, Team founder and boss of Herts based Geomatics company Plowman Craven, commented:

“This was a tough race and I’m pleased with the way the team worked together to keep a strong presence at the front of each stage. The pink and blue Plowman Craven train was in almost every move and always at the front of the race. Freddie rode a fantastic prologue and it’s a shame he punctured in Stage Two.

“Gordon has clearly announced his intention to challenge hard for the Premier Calendar this year; the support he received this weekend, not only from James and Freddie but also Jason Allen, James McCullum and the rest of the Team, clearly shows that other riders and squads should take that challenge very seriously.”

Next Sunday (18 March) the Team travel to Buckinghamshire for the High Wycombe CC Spring Road Race.
