Plowman Craven Evans Cycles World Cup weekend

26th February 2007

Plowman Craven Evans Cycles Race Team competed in their first Track Cycling World Cup event at Manchester over the weekend, and declared themselves pleased with their performance.

Tony GibbThe Team rode in the individual pursuit, scratch and points races as well as the Madison. Team member Freddie Johanssen also rode the same events for the Swedish National Team.

James McCallum and James Taylor reached the finals of the scratch and points races respectively. The heats and finals of both events were hard fought races from the gun, and the two James' rode strongly, providing the Team with welcome exposure. James McCallum in particular made a number of attacks off the front in the scratch race, providing the Team with excellent TV coverage and giving commentators plenty to discuss.

Jason Allen competed in the individual pursuit. Despite the disadvantage of having no opponent in his heat he looked stylish and rode a fast first 3 km, posting a respectable final time. Teaming up for the first time with Tony Gibb in the Madison, the pair rode a very fast heat and only narrowly missed the cut for the final by one point.

Simon Barnes, Team founder and boss of the Herts based geomatics company Plowman Craven, expressed satisfaction at the weekend's performances:

“We always knew that this was going to be a hard event. The World Cup attracts the very best track cyclists in the world, and with only five weeks to go before the World Championships the national teams were racing for selection and the track specialists really beginning to come into top form."

“As predominantly a road squad we have plenty of road miles behind us but our track legs were hard to find, and I think that difference showed. Preparation time on the track is crucial but there is a shortage of facilities and many good squads looking to use them.”

“Given this is only our second season I’m satisfied with our performance at this high level and very happy with the exposure we received.”

Next weekend the Team compete in three races in different parts of the Country. On Saturday 3 March the entire squad compete in the Eddie Soens handicap circuit race at Aintree, Liverpool. The following day, Sunday 4 March, the Team split their efforts between the Seven Bridge road race in the West Country and the Wally Gimber road race in Kent.
