Plowman Craven Evans Cycles Racing Team to race in Track Cycling World Cup

20th February 2007

Plowman Craven Evans Cycles Race Team head to Manchester this weekend for the final round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup (23 – 25 February).

The Team is competing against a record field of 36 national and 10 trade teams from around the world, including Olympic and World Champions. In what promises to be three spectacular days of racing, Plowman Craven riders will be competing for World Cup medals and World Championship qualification. The event is being shown live on both BBC Grandstand and Eurosport, with Plowman Craven riders taking part in the action on each of the three days of competition.

The Plowman Craven Evans Cycles squad includes a number of track specialists, including four Commonwealth Games medallists and five times National Madison Champions Tony Gibb and James Taylor. The World Cup will be their first track competition since gaining UCI registration at the end of last season and the Team are keen to experience competition at this level.

“Although many of the Team have experience of big events like the Commonwealth Games, this is our first World Cup race and the experience will be invaluable” commented Simon Barnes, boss of the Herts based surveying company Plowman Craven and founder of the Team. “There are a lot of world class teams and riders taking part this weekend, but we will be offering some serious competition and putting ourselves firmly on the map.”

Plowman Craven Evans Cycles are competing in four events over the weekend:

Jason Allen goes in the individual pursuit on Friday, the same event he came fourth in at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Jason is the Team’s latest signing and a member of the New Zealand National Track Team with whom he won a Bronze medal in the team pursuit at the 2006 Games.

James McCallum competes in the 15 km scratch race, also on Friday night. James won Bronze in the 20km scratch race in the 2006 Commonwealth Games for Scotland and has already competed for Great Britain in the Junior Track Cycling World Cup.

Saturday sees James Taylor leading the Plowman Craven challenge in the points race. A Great Britain squad rider, James has over 30 National Championship medals.

Tony Gibb and Jason Allen team up to ride the Madison on Sunday. Tony is a five times National Madison Champion and the third of the Teams Commonwealth Games medallists having taken Silver in the scratch.

The distinctive pink and blue Plowman Craven Evans Cycles strip will be easy to pick out during the three days of action.
